Demi Lovato has plenty to smile about these days. She’s currently touring with one of her best friends and a fellow Disney alum, Nick Jonas, is enjoying immense success in the music industry, and has a brand-new sexy summer hairstyle to boot. Even after breaking up with long-time boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama this year, Demi has kept a positive outlook on life, and has, like any good artist, channeled her personal struggles into professional gold. So, when Demi took to Instagram this week to reveal a new tattoo of a smiley face on her pinkie finger, we couldn’t help but smile right along with her.
Never one to shy away from showing off her tattoos, particularly the ones that hold an important meaning for her, Lovato posted on Instagram over the weekend, and in the post, the pop star’s adorable new ink is blurred out and then comes into focus. She captioned the Instagram photo, “Cause life’s too short not to tattoo your pinky.” Demi may have relied on social media to show the world her new smiley face tattoo, but the very first time the pinkie finger tat was spotted was actually several days prior, during a performance for her 2016 Honda Civic Tour with Nick Jonas in Rosemont, Illinois, on August 2.
She hasn’t yet spoken out about the meaning behind her simple smiley face tattoo, inked on the pad of her left-hand pinkie finger, but don’t let the cheeky nature of the design fool you. It’s been a very long time since Demi has gotten a “meaningless” tattoo—like the feather she had inked behind her ear on a Warped Tour tour bus in 2010. Her more recent tattoos, like the “Stay Strong” ink on her wrists and the “now I’m a warrior” tattoo on her back, are pieces that hold an immense amount of meaning for the 23-year-old, who spent nearly three months in a treatment facility in 2011, for “emotional and physical issues” that included bulimia and cutting.
These days, Demi is candid about the struggles she has faced in the past, and about her rocky road to recovery, and during a performance at the Democratic National Convention last month, the singer urged lawmakers to pass legislation that would result in improved access to good mental healthcare. “We can do better,” Demi told the crowd at the DNC. “This is not about politics, it’s simply the right thing to do.”
Miniature tattoos are all the rage right now, just ask Cara Delevingne, Kylie Jenner and Miley Cyrus. We are totally digging Demi Lovato’s tiny new finger tat—a daily reminder for her to smile and find the joy in life.
