In the wake of the tragic shooting at Orlando’s Pulse nightclub that left 49 people dead and more than 50 people injured people all over the world have been trying to find ways to cope. Kelly Osbourne, reality TV star and daughter of Ozzy, went to her local tattoo shop to make a very bold statement—she had the world “solidarity” inked onto the side of her head.
The Orlando shooting has struck many nerves because it was not only the worst shooting in American history but it also targeted the vulnerable LBGT community. People around the country have been acting in inspiring ways as they show that they will not back down to an act of terrorism. This has been shown by the astoundingly long line of people rushing to donate blood the morning after the attack and the many vigils that have been taking place in cities all over the globe.
Tattoos often help people heal from tragic events. There is something soothing about wearing your raw feelings in such a public manner. In an Instragram post Osbourne explained why she got the tattoo.
“Solidarity: “Noun. Unity of feeling of individuals with a common interest or purpose.” Individually, we have rights and unique gifts. Together we have strength and powerful harmony. I wanted to get this tattoo for a long time. The tragedy in Orlando devastated me and reminded me that every moment of our lives is precious. Every human is precious. Love hard. Live gracefully, authentically and with conviction, respect, purpose and compassion. Together we achieve what is impossible to those who stand alone. Those of us who embrace and respect freedom stand together, progress together, celebrate together and grieve together. You are not alone.”
We applaud Osbourne for making such a bold statement in support of the victims of the Orlando shooting. We expect that this will just be the first and most public of many tribute tattoos we will see in the coming months. Tattoo enthusiasts often claim addiction, but true addiction involves chemical and psychological dependence. Obsessive love for tattoos is not the same as addiction.
