June is LGBT Pride Month and it was established to remember the events of the 1969 Stonewall riots in Manhattan. The Stonewall riots were a series of rebellions against an NYPD raid that took place at the Stonewall Inn on June 28th, 1969. These riots and the pride parade that took place in memorial one year later, are considered some of the biggest turning points in LGBT activism, spawning similar celebrations in cities around the globe.
In 2009, President Obama declared June LGBT Pride Month (an amendment of Gay and Lesbian Pride Month established by President Bill Clinton) and every year, celebrations and parades are held in cities around the world. The rainbow flag, also known as the pride flag, has been synonymous with pride and the LGBT community since the 1970s—inspired by gay politician Harvey Milk, the Stonewall Riots, and Judy Garland’s song “Over the Rainbow.” Today, pride flags are flown in remembrance of LGBT history and suffering, as well as an act of solidarity with the community at large. Check out some of these rainbow tattoos and be sure to check out the pride events happening in your area.
