Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Tattoos!
Take a look back at tattoos inspired by this 1988 masterpiece.
Following his directorial debut with 1985’s “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure,” Tim Burton released another smash hit, 1988’s “Beetlejuice.” “Beetlejuice” follows a married couple named Barbara and Adam Maitland, who soon discover they are recently deceased ghosts trapped in their own home, which has been inhabited by a new family. Barbara and Adam befriend the new family’s teenage daughter, Lydia Deetz and enlist the help of a self-proclaimed bio-exorcist named Betelgeuse (pronounced Beetlejuice) to scare away the Deetz family.
Despite being Burton’s second film, “Beetlejuice” has a spectacular celebrity cast, including Michael Keaton as Betelgeuse. It also features Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as the Maitlands, as well as a then 17-year-old Winona Ryder as Lydia. Initially, Burton wanted Sammy Davis Jr to play Betelgeuse, however he was ultimately won over by Keaton, who’d go on to play Bruce Wayne in Burton’s “Batman” in 1989 and “Batman Returns” in 1992.
“Beetlejuice” has had a tremendous impact on popular culture, earning an animated series that ran from 1989 to 1991. Then in 2018, 30 years after the film debuted, “Beetlejuice” was adapted into a musical, which first premiered at the National Theatre in Washington D.C. The musical then made its was to Broadway in April of 2019, releasing shows up until the 2020 pandemic.
