It’s been said for centuries that the eyes are the window to the soul. And it’s pretty true. Our eyes convey so many emotions that one glance can tell you a lot about a person. Our eyes are organs that belong to the visual system and have the ability to detect light then convert it into electro-chemical impulses. Over 96% of animal species possess what’s known as a complex optical system, whereas organisms such as mollusks and anthropods possess image-resolving eyes.

Eyes have been the subject of art pieces for centuries and can be found across a wide variety of mediums. For example, many have been transfixed by the Mona Lisa’s eyes, as they appear to follow you around the room. Painter Margaret Keane made large eyes her signature. Her story was famously told in the Tim Burton biographical drama “Big Eyes,” as her second husband Walter Keane took credit for her work and after a court paint-off in the 1960s, she was finally able to claim ownership of her art.
