75 Magnificent Jellyfish Tattoos
Have you ever been stung by a jellyfish?
Under the sea, there are plenty unusual and interesting creatures. One of our favorite creatures are jellyfish, also known as sea jellies. They’re known for their gelatinous bell-shaped bodies and trailing tentacles. Jellyfish propel themselves by pulsating their bell and their tentacles contain stinging cells that they use to catch prey or defend themselves against predators. Jellyfish are one of the oldest creatures that we know of, as they can be traced back at least 500 million years. Jellyfish are exceptionally varied creatures, as there are over 2,000 known species and up to 300,000 potential species that have yet to be discovered. The largest jellyfish get to be 6.5 feet tall in height and the smallest are a mere 1/32 inch in size. The longest jellyfish is the lion’s mane jellyfish whose tentacles are approximately 120 ft in length.
Jellyfish are often known for stinging those who get in their way. While most jellyfish stings are harmless, while still painful, some can be deadly. One of the deadliest jellyfish is the Australian box jelly or sea wasp, which releases lethal venom onto their victims. From 1884 to 2021, the sea wasp jellyfish has caused 64 known deaths. It’s estimated that around 150 million people are stung by jellyfish every year, however, this typically only results in a few hundred fatalities.
