25 Marvelous Marie Antoinette Tattoos

Do you know Marie Antoinette's story?

There have been many notable kings and queens of the past, but it takes someone special to be remembered worldwide centuries later. One of the most notorious royals of all time is Marie Antoinette, the last queen of France. Antoinette was born an archduchess of Vienna in 1755. Antoinette became the dauphine of France in 1770 at the age of 14 after marrying Louis-Auguste, the heir to the French throne. In 1774, Louis-Auguste assumed the throne and Antoinette became queen. She’s regarded as one of history’s most famous fashion icons, as she used her riches to indulge in the finer things in life. She was particularly extravagant when it came to her hairstyles, with one look containing a model battleship atop her locks.

During her reign, Antoinette gained a negative reputation for being promiscuous, spending lavishly and aligning with France’s enemies. She even became known in the country’s satirical papers as Madame Déficit for her extravagant spending despite the nation’s immense debt. Soon, a revolution started brewing in France and this spawned one of the biggest misconceptions about Antoinette—her iconic quote, “Let them eat cake.” Although Antoinette didn’t actually say this in response to the nation’s poverty, it was reflective of the queen’s ignorance to France’s suffering.

The French Revolution officially began in 1789 with the storming of the Bastille Fortress and France’s declaration of independence was soon created. Protestors stormed the palace of Versailles and Antoinette retreated to Paris’s Tuileries Palace. Antoinette and the other royals attempted to flee the country dressed as peasants, however, they were arrested and brought back to Paris. She was moved to a prison in Paris called The Temple and the monarchy was officially abolished. In 1793, after spending nine months in prison, Antoinette was charged for conspiring against the revolution and was sentenced to death for high treason. Antoinette was guillotined in 1793.

Whether you love her or hate her, you can’t deny that Marie Antoinette has been historically influential.
