There are plenty of stories about people who have done much crazier things to express their love for the Dallas Cowboys. Randy Gregory—the defensive lineman from Nebraska who got picked up by the Cowboys in the NFL Draft’s second round—has more reason than most to wear his love for the team on his sleeve.

Permanently marking the team’s logo on his arm not only shows his commitment to his team, but it also shows an appreciation that he really does owe to the organization. Leading up to the draft, Gregory was expected to get snatched up in the first round. As it got closer, stories about Gregory missing meetings with teams and rumors about his mental health issues began to spread. Then, to top it all off, he failed a drug test at the scouting combine in February—testing positive for marijuana.

Even with all of that, Gregory hardly makes the list of “most controversial” Cowboys. Wide receiver Terrell Owens’s attitude got his name in headlines almost as much as his talent did. And Michael Irvin, the wide receiver who helped the Dallas Cowboys win three Super Bowls in the 90s, got arrested in 1996 for cocaine possession. Nine years later, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Gregory seems to have learned his lesson from his drop in the draft. “One of the main things I learned,” he says in an interview with Dallas News, “is that this could all be gone in a minute.” Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones and his staff are all standing behind Gregory, who, according to the interview, has a great support system within the team. So inking that star on his arm seems pretty justified.
