The Marvel Cinematic Universe have brought many characters into the pop culture mainstream, including Scarlet Witch. Scarlet Witch, also known as Wanda Maximoff first appeared in The X-Men #4 comic in March of 1964. Initially, the character was given the ability to alter probability, yet like many comic book characters, that’s changed over the years. Since the comics of the 1980s, Scarlet Witch has been portrayed as a powerful sorceress and has the ability to alter reality. Explore Scarlet Witch’s evolution from comics to the MCU, and see her depicted in 30 stunning Scarlet Witch tattoos from talented artists around the world in the gallery below.
Scarlet Witch made her onscreen debut in an episode of “The Marvel Super Heroes” animated series, where she was voiced by Peg Dixon. Over the years, she’s made several cameo appearances in other animated series, but in 2014 she got her big break. Scarlet Witch first appears in a mid-credits scene in 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” She’s portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen, who made her film debut in 2011’s “Martha Marcy May Marlene” and is the younger sister of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. Olsen would continue to portray Scarlet Witch throughout the MCU film universe, with her most recent big screen appearance being 2022’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
Since 2021 Olsen has also portrayed the character in the Disney+ series “WandaVision.” This show is set after the events of 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” and it was the first television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be produced by Marvel Studios and to share continuity with the franchise’s films. The series was nominated for 23 Primetime Emmy Awards, winning three, and a spin-off series focusing on Kathryn Hahn’s character Agatha Harkness is currently in the works.
