Celebrate the bravery and hard work of these tattooed nurses

During COVID-19, nurses are risking their lives to help patients in hospitals around the world. According to the CDC, there are over 1 million cases of COVID-19 in the United States and this number is growing exponentially every day. Our health care system hasn’t experienced a pandemic of this magnitude in a hundred years and despite the many advancements that have come in medicine, they never could have anticipated the impact this virus would have on hospitals and health care workers.

The best thing that people can do is to stay home to stop the spread of COVID-19 and keep other people safe, especially the elderly and those with compromised or suppressed immune systems. However, nurses don’t have the privilege of staying home and because they’re putting their own health at risk, we want to do what we can to say thanks.

Thank you to all the brave and badass nurses who are working on the front lines of this pandemic in order to keep the rest of the world safe. Thank you to the selfless nurses working 80+ hour weeks and doing it with a smile. Today was my last shift at Skyline Medical Center in the trauma ICU. I am so thankful for the years I was able to work at this amazing hospital and work on the best unit I could’ve ever possibly imagined. Thank you to every single person I have crossed paths with, you’ve taught me so much about not only nursing, but about myself. First night as a nurse before shift: I’m nervous these peoples lives are going to be in my hands. I keep asking myself how do I take my book knowledge and turn that into real world hands on knowledge. The truth is I have no clue but I’m hoping with everything that comes my way it slowly starts to make sense. Im excited to learn how to turn that knowledge into real world experience. It’s going to take some time before the new nurse nerves wear off. I’ve been told by nurses that the new nurse nerves don’t go away for years. I’m excited to start this new chapter to find out what it means to be a nurse. Now this is not something I usually do, but I really do want to talk about this for a minute. I am a nurse at the Clinic for infectious diseases. My primary station is specialised for Pulmonology with strong point on working wit ALS, MS, COPB, transplant patients and of course infectious diseases of the respiratory tract. For this reason we were (out of a few cases) mostly kept CoVID free, because we deal with patients who are in need of respirators but are also in the high risk group for fatal CoVID complications. For now it is remaining so, but we are backing up and preparing for the possible second wave of hospitalisations, since we are the first to start admitting patients on our station, when the rest reach their limit. For this past week I spent some of my days helping out at ICU with CoVID-19 patients on a station below us. It is heartbreaking, seeing and working with real situation and threat, while on the other side seeing all the craziness of people who think this is some kind of a hoax. It is beyond imaginable and not to mention worrying when you see 21 year old, who went through 2 reanimations and was lying in coma for 3 weeks, because of CoVID, with no underlying condition of any chronic illness or any illness whatsoever. The only thing to point out in this case it is a fact that he is a smoker (QUIT SMOKING !!!) And he is fighting for his life. Not to mention he is not the only one that young either. This is NOT LIKE A FLU !!!! We do have a GOOD reason for worry because this virus has so many different faces and we know so little by now, every week we get new information and every week the situation changes. And the misinformation was never higher. PLEASE be mindful when you are receiving any kind of information. Listen to people who know what they are talking about. I absolutely understand the frustration, but going against it for no good reason is not gonna help solve anything. And last but not least, politics and pandemic are NOT one and the same thing !!!! Was für ein hype plötzlich um uns Pflegekräfte gemacht wird, Leute wir machen nichts anders, wir machen das gleiche wie vor Wochen, Monaten und Jahren und zwar sind wir da, für unsere Bewohner und Patienten. Wir haben jedes Jahr schwere Zeiten, z.b. wenn wir mit dem Norovirus kämpfen, mit der Krätze, mit unzuverlässigen Betreuern, nicht einsichtigen Kranken und deren Angehörigen, Grippe Wellen, Urlaubszeiten in denen noch dazu eine Krankmeldung nach der anderen reinflattert, etc…!
