This Horror Movie Exposes Every Cam Girls’ Biggest Fear

Are You Excited to Watch Cam?

For the last several decades, horror movies have exposed the fears and cultural issues of each generation. As an example, slasher films thrived in the 1990s due to an onslaught of mass murders in the years prior. Another instance of this phenomenon can be seen through Jordan Peele’s Get Out, which taped into racial issues that are hardwired into American culture and exposed a cacophony dangerous tropes—including white saviorism and liberal ignorance.

Well, it appears that the producers of Peele’s Academy Award winning film have done it again, this time exposing the fears of adult entertainers and social media influencers. Take a look at the gallery below to learn about the upcoming release of Blumhouse Production’s latest horror movie and stay tuned until the end of the article to catch a peek of the official trailer.

Cam is the latest psychological horror-thriller to hit Netflix and it’s already expected to be one of the hottest films of the fall. The film first premiered on July 18th at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montréal, however, it was picked up by Netflix and will be released to the masses on November 16th. Directed by Daniel Goldhaber and written by Isa Mazzei, the film tells the story of a cam girl who discovers that she’s been replaced on her chatroom by an exact replica of herself.

In the film, Madeline Brewer’s character Alice/Lola is an aspiring cam girl working to make it into the top 50 of her online cam site. However, one day she discovers that she’s been locked out of her account and has been replaced with an identical replica of herself. This causes her to fall down the rabbit hole, as she struggles to maintain sanity while her online identity is turned upside down.

The film tapes into real fears of this generation, from online identity fraud to having a profile deleted on social media. And although most people wouldn’t bat an eyelash over being locked out of their social media account, for those who make a living promoting their work online, these events can be seriously devastating. Camgirls, porn stars and even tattoo models rely on social media to build their brand. While many don’t make a living off of Instagram alone, they use it to promote their Patreon pages, camming sites, private Snapchat accounts, etc. And in an age where social media sites like Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube are cracking down harder than ever on independent content creators—this film is especially relevant.

Cam stars  Brewer, who fans will recognize from her breakout role in Orange is the New Black and her chilling portrayal of Janine on Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale. Her roles in the previous series’ prove that Brewer has the acting chops to carrying her character’s descent into madness and guide the audience on a technological hell ride.

Take a look at the captivating first trailer below and let us know in the comments section on Facebook what you think about this provocative new film and if you’ll be tuning in to the release.
