‘Suicide Squad’ Star, Jai Courtney, Got a Queensland Tattoo After Losing a Bet

Jai Courtney and his Suicide Squad co-stars opted for matching “Skwad” tattoos to commemorate their time together on the set of the highly-anticipated summer flick, many of which were done by actress Margot Robbie herself, and when Courtney lost a recent bet to Robbie over a rugby league game in Australia, the blonde bombshell broke out her tattoo gun again, this time inking Courtney with a tattoo of her home state. Located on his left wrist, Courtney’s tattoo reads “QLD” in black capital letters. Courtney plays the supervillain Captain Boomerang in Suicide Squad, due out in August, and while the Australian-born actor has plenty of tattoos to his name, this one may be his most embarrassing.

“I lost a bet to Margot Robbie over a rugby league game back home [in Australia],” Courtney said during a Facebook Live interview with Steve Weintraub at the New York City press junket for Suicide Squad over the weekend. “It’s a series called the State of Origin, that’s basically a representing series where the state of New South Wales plays the state of Queensland over three games. […] Feeling cocky, as one does, I suggested that [Robbie and I] place a bet, and that if I won, I would tattoo my state on her somewhere, and if she won, it would be the other way around, and she won.”

According to Courtney, he got to pick where Robbie inked the Queensland tattoo, and it could be small, “and I just thought, ‘fuck it,’ I mean, most of my tattoos are right there [on my arms]. I wasn’t going to, like, try to hide it somewhere stupid.” As for Courtney’s future plans for his Queensland tattoo, he said, “There’s no rule against getting it crossed out, either, so, you know, I’m comfortable with that possibility.” The actor may want to reconsider crossing out or covering up his Queensland tattoo though, because now that Robbie has inked 50 or so tats, she is well on her way to becoming a true artist, and that “QLD” tattoo is a Robbie original.

Joel Kinnaman, who plays Rick Flag in the movie, also got a Suicide Squad-inspired tattoo during filming, done by Will Smith, even though Kinnaman’s wife is professional tattoo artist Cleo Wattenstrom. “She was laughing,” Kinnaman said of his wife’s reaction to the relatively large piece. “And everybody else, I mean they were getting these little teeny ones on their feet and I was like, ‘Oh, ok, that’s what we’re doing. Ok I got it. Could have told me that before.” And as for Jai Courtney’s assistant, Simon, he also got a “SKWAD” tattoo from Margot Robbie, but she accidentally spelled it wrong. “Everyone was spelling it as ‘S’ ‘K’ ‘W’ ‘A’ ‘D,’” she said during a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “But I went straight from the ‘S’ to the ‘W.’” Oops!!
