Did Ariana Grande’s Neck Tattoo Foreshadow Her Givenchy Collaboration?

On May 9th, 2019 French fashion house Givency announced their latest muse and face of the brand: Ariana Grande. Givenchy has attracted the attention of numerous celebrities since its debut in 1952, including Lauren Bacall, Greta Garbo, Grace Kelly, and Elizabeth Taylor. However, the most famous ambassador of the brand was actress Audrey Hepburn, who played a critical role in making the brand a house hold name.

1n 1953, Hepburn and Givenchy met to create the costumes for her film Sabrina. Hepburn went on to wear Givenchy throughout her film career, including the iconic little black dress shown in 1961’s opening scene for Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Hepburn was the muse of the fashion house for the next forty years, up until her death at the age of 63 on January 20th of 1993.

26 years later, Givenchy announced their latest muse, Grande, through social media and paid homage to Hepburn’s little black dress in the Instagram campaign. However, Grande’s dress wasn’t the only nod to Hepburn.

Back in 2014, Grande visited Los Angeles tattoo artist Romeo Lacoste for a small script tattoo on the back of her neck. The tattoo reads “mille tendresse,” which translates to a thousand tendernesses and is a direct nod to Truman Capote’s novella Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Although this tattoo is likely a coincidence, fans speculate that Grande’s collaboration with Givenchy has been in the works for years and this tattoo foreshadowed the eventual campaign.
