We see sugar skulls all of the time in tattoo art, but sometimes it’s easy to forget the origin of the beautiful designs. Calaveras are a key component in Mexican Day of the Dead celebrations. While the skulls are made out of sugar and look delicious, traditionally they are not intended for consumption. Often the decoration of the skulls can contain inedible parts like beads, so it’s a good thing people aren’t trying to scarf them down like candy. Although there are a lot of Calaveras that are crafted with the intention of being enjoyed, sometimes these are made from sugar flavored with vanilla or chocolate. In the gallery below we have gathered some of our favorite traditional sugar skulls for you to enjoy.
