No matter how mainstream tattooing becomes, there are some tattoos you should just hold out for. It’s recommended that you get your first tattoo in a place that can easily be hidden by clothes, as many young people aren’t settled into their careers yet. This means that many first tattoos are done on the arms, legs or torso. Tattoos that extend beyond these areas and are visible pretty much at all times, for instance the neck, are often recommended for more serious collectors.

Let’s be real, getting a neck tattoo is a pretty big deal. Sure, it may not be as big of a deal as it was 15 to 20 years ago, but it’s still a huge commitment. However, we understand the appeal of someone itching to get a neck tattoo—they’re totally epic.

A neck tattoo, no matter the style or subject matter, says that you’re a badass. Not only because you dared to get a tattoo in this spot and face the ire of your mother, but because this spot is far from easy. The neck is one of the most challenging parts of the body to tattoo and be tattooed on, making the end result even more satisfying.
