Problem Serves Up More ‘Coffee & Kush’
To coincide with the release of his new mixtape, "Coffee & Kush Vol. 2," we give you a preview of our upcoming interview with Problem.
In the past three decades, Compton, California has raised some of hip-hop’s greatest stars, and lyricist Problem is ensuring his name will be remembered among them. “Coffee & Kush Vol. 2,” the second installation of his mixtape trilogy, solidly makes that case. While he went completely solo in Spring 2020 on Volume 1, the new mixtape boasts some formidable appearances from Snoop Dogg, Freddie Gibbs, Tyrese, Jay Rock, Jack Harlow, Daphne Wayans and Terrace Martin.
We spoke with Problem for our upcoming Health/Holiday Issue, and he explained that collaborating with these legends was actually quite an organic experience.
“These guys are just my friends, and these are the people who always talked to me. If I’m hot or cold, they were always there,” he expresses. “It was always bigger than music, and just through the grace of God all of them happened to grow and become huge or stay huge. When it comes to Snoop Dogg, or Freddie (Gibbs) who’s reemerged as a star, or Jack Harlow who I met maybe three years ago being the same exact way through stardom; Jay Rock, I started with him. They are huge stars who have accomplished amazing things, but these are my friends. I just notice that I’d rather just fuck with the people who fuck with me than go around anywhere else. My friends are cool as shit, and just rocking with the video.
“A lot of the stuff was created before this year,” he continues, “so we didn’t know who was gonna get hot or cold. Jack Harlow called me and he was like ‘Aye man remember that joint we did?’ I said, ‘Yeah I’m gonna throw it on the next project,’ and all of a sudden, maybe a week or two after that, he caught FIRE.”
Whether he’s recording with his friends or going it alone, there is no doubt that Problem is here for the long haul, loyally.
