Whether you love it or hate it, you can’t deny that “Big Mouth” has made a big impact on popular culture. “Big Mouth” is an animated series that was created by Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett. It’s roughly based on Kroll and Goldberg’s teenage selves and their journey going through puberty. Kroll plays a fictionalized version of his younger self and also lends his voice to a plethora of other characters, including Maury the Hormone Monster and Coach Steve. John Mulaney plays Kroll’s best friend Andrew and the show features vocal performances by Jessi Klein, Jason Mantzoukas, Jenny Slate, Fred Armisen, Maya Rudolph and Jordan Peele.
The show highlights the many trials and tribulations of puberty, from masturbation, to sexual arousal to menstruation to sexual orientation to first dates. Hormone monsters guide the teens throughout the show, acting as over-the-shoulder angels with a twist. The show features several more fantasy elements to illustrate the magic of puberty, including the Shame Wizard, celebrity ghosts and talking pubes.
“Big Mouth” premiered its first season on Netflix in 2017 and has debuted three seasons so far, including a Valentine’s Day Special. In July 2019, the show was renewed to a sixth season and based on past seasons, the fourth season is expected to premiere in either late September or early October. In this upcoming season, we’ll see Jessi move to a new school, as well as, Nick and Andrew mend their friendship. Following the BLM protests of 2020, actor Jenny Slate will voice 7th grader Missy Foreman-Greenwald throughout the fourth season, however, will be replaced by an African-American actor beginning with season five.
