For years many people have asked the golden question, “What that mouth do?” And when it comes to science, mouths do a lot, actually. Our mouths serve many distinct purposes, for one, allowing us to take in food. After all, we’re not plants and we cannot just go outside on a sunny day to absorb our lunch. Second, our mouths allow us to make vocal sounds, allowing us to communicate with other people and animals.

Although almost every animal under the sun is born with a mouth that’s integral to their survival, some organisms have adapted to live without. These animals include paracatenula worms, which have neither a mouth nor a digestive system, instead sustaining themselves from the bacteria living within their bodies. Now that’s evolution at it’s finest.
